Inspect clay delving site at Monarto, redesigned by Rod Eldridge, PIRSA Rural Solutions. This site looks at delving sub surface clay into sandy surface layers and the changes to the physical & chemical characteristics of the soil.

Leave Monarto, travel to Murray Bridge

Arrive at Murray Bridge Dairy Farm – A high-tech dairy operation on the River Murray which is their main water source.

Starrick Farm – A highly productive farming operation in a low rainfall mallee environment.

Arrive SARDI Crop Evaluation Site and meet with Richard Saunders, MSFP. This site is investigating new varieties specifically designed for mallee.

Tiller farm Pinery. The Tiller family run a very successful medium-to large continuous cropping operation across a range of soil types in 375-500mm rainfall country in the lower north region of SA. They grow durum wheat, bread wheat, barley, canola, lentils, beans and peas.

Travel to Bowmans where ABB grain director and local farmer, Paul Daniel, will discuss changes to grain marketing and storage and handling systems in SA in recent times.

11:15am

Balco Hay Plant and container packing facility. Balco is a major processor and exporter of cereal hay to the Japanese dairy market. It has recently established a container packaging facility, which has increased market access for grain growers in the region. Lunch

Travel to Hart where our guest speaker on the bus will discuss the expansion of chicken meat production facilities in the Port Wakefield region, including new opportunities for the domestic feed grains market and new fertiliser types.

Hart Field Site: Manager, Peter Hooper, will explain how the 20 year-old site is one of the most successful cropping field day sites in Australia.

Visit “Minbee,” Michael & Jodie Connors dryland high intensity dairy with 300 milkers grazing forage triticale, Italian & perennial ryegrass. Meet agronomist, Greg Mitchell.
